Battery, charging and making a charge last

• Use the right cable. A charge-only cable will charge the player but will not let a computer see it.
• Charge before a flash. A firmware install that loses power halfway is the one situation that can leave a player needing a manual recovery.
• Turn the screen off. On players with a screen timeout, shorten it. The display is the largest drain.
• Use the sleep timer. The music app can stop playback after 0 to 120 minutes, which is kinder than playing all night.
• Store it half charged. If the player will sit in a drawer for months, charge it to roughly half rather than leaving it empty or full.

If the player feels warm while charging, that is normal. If it becomes hot, unplug it and try another charger. A player that will not charge at all usually needs a different cable or a different power source before it needs a repair.
